17th March '09 - LESSON NUMBER ONE

Lesson #1: 17 March 2009
9.30am-12nn

Our class gathered to have our very first session with ms seetoh!
p.s/ ms chan was there to learn as well(:

Honestly, we came in unprepared. But ms seetoh, being very thoughtful and enthusiastic, brought all the stuff that we needed. She showed us some of her own collection, and they were really impressive.

After laying newspapers over the tables and sending leon to fetch the water, ms seetoh handed us each a transparency, which serves as a base? and some tools to shape and cut the clay.

For the first lesson, we were allowed to make any random things. All we needed was to take a hefty pinch out of the sticky clay and start moulding and kneading it, just like play-doh. Only that clay hardens after a while, so we need to act quickly.

How to make a clay piece.
1. Knead the clay.
2. Flatten the clay using a roller, or a glass bottle, to a minimum of 8mm. ( lol, i made this up)
3. When you feel like it, use the cookie cutters, cutouts, or the shaping knife(the green and yellow thing above) to get a basic shape for your clay piece.
4. With a little creativity, design the clay piece whatever way you want it.
5. Leave the clay to dry (room temperature will be fine, or use a hair dryer of sorts if you're in a rush)
6. COLOUR your clay piece using pastel paint colors and paint brushes.
7. Leave clay to dry in the sun.
8. Apply a layer of varnish over it for a glossy finish, as well as to harden it.
9. Leave it to dry and you're done!

However, things does not go as smoothly as it seems. Look at how our pieces turn out.

RANDOM TIDBITS.
1. Use water to smoothen out rough surfaces for your clay, or to join pieces together.
2. Varnish can be used to gloss over the clay using a cotton bud or a cheap paintbrush after colouring it, so it looks nicer. the colouring might run off the varnish, so be careful not to dip your cotton bud or paintbrush into the bottle of varnish after use.

P.S get photos from ms seetoh.!
